Discovering Treasures: What Awaits You in the Rare Books and Lowy Collection Room
Step into a space where history whispers from the shelves and every book tells a story. The Rare Books and Lowy Collection Room at Ādisōke isn’t just a room. It’s an experience designed for discovery, reflection, and connection with Canada’s rich documentary heritage.
Whether you’re a researcher chasing a rare citation, a student diving into primary sources, or a curious visitor on a guided tour, this room gives access to something special for everyone.
Rare books collection: discovering wonderful universes
The room evokes a quiet, scholarly atmosphere with the charm of an old library. It features elegant glass cabinetry that both preserves and showcases the collections, complemented by heritage furnishings such as a vintage writing desk, which lend a timeless touch of tradition. But don’t be fooled: while the setting may feel classic, the materials on display often challenge conventional narratives, offering both timeless treasures and fresh reinterpretations.
At the heart of the room is a meticulously curated selection of approximately 3,000 rare books, showcasing Canadiana from before and after Confederation. Through the glass-door cabinets lining the walls, visitors are invited to engage with works each more unique than the next such as accounts of Arctic travel, Mordecai Richler works, Indigenous language publications, titles by Lucy Maud Montgomery, and bookbinding art by Odette Drapeau. While some of these precious books are displayed for viewing only, others – like newer editions of the behind-the-glass originals – will be available for hands-on exploration in the Research Room.
The Lowy Collection: A World of Hebraica and Judaica
In a dedicated section of the room, the Jacob M. Lowy Collection presents approximately 1,500 rare volumes of Hebraica and Judaica spanning the 15th to 20th centuries. This collection is a treasure trove of religious, historical, and philosophical texts in languages such as Hebrew, Yiddish, and Judeo-Arabic. Through this collection, you can access focused study and cultural reflection, preserving a legacy that continues to inspire.
